The Process of Repointing Your Chimney

When it’s the time of year for heavy rains or snow, are you concerned of the terrible things that could happen to your chimney? Don’t be alarmed. Although your chimney is susceptible to water damage and deterioration of your masonry walls especially with the bricks, there is one clear cut solution to this problem that can ease your worries – repointing your chimney.

Moisture, despite your best efforts, will get into your chimney and wreak havoc on your masonry. Repointing may be the answer.

Basically, the reason why there is a need for repointing your chimney is because of the possibility of deterioration in the mortar joints due to constant change in temperatures.  When water or snow starts to enter your chimney walls they will greatly affect the bricks and cause moisture which is the number one enemy of bricks and mortar. As the years go by, season after season, the mortar will eventually need repair.

At Young’s Chimney Service, we have licensed and skilled professionals that can help you understand the process of repointing your chimney and understanding why, after years of usage, it becomes a necessity. Repointing your chimney takes time, effort and most importantly skill. There are many factors to consider like for example, the model, the structure and the type.

First of all, they would inspect the inside of your chimney using special cameras to see and visualize the extent of the mortar damage. We all know how technology has impressed us with complex models and structures and even add-ons to provide safe, convenient and effective use of our furnaces. That’s why our experts need to keep up with the latest models and not just be familiar with the older ones.

After which, the damaged mortar joints are removed. This is a bit critical because they need to make sure that the depth is exact so that other bricks will not be affected. After this, new mortar is placed on the affected area. The composition of the mortar used should be the same to prevent bigger problems in the future.

Applying mortar over bricks carefully happens next. This is the most fundamental step of repointing your chimney. Lastly, applying a waterproof sealant should be done to complete the process. This helps prevent premature deterioration of the mortar and bricks and preventing water to infiltrate your chimney.

So this is what needs to be done and we are proud to say that we do it best. We can assure you that after years of experience and vigorous training, we can offer you the best highly trained and skilled professionals to take care of your chimney needs. Call us today.

Animals in your chimney can cause huge problems.
