We Provide Professional And Thorough Dryer Vent Installation & Cleaning!

Dryer Vent Debris Removed from DryerLike your chimney, your dryer vent has the tough task of bringing heat, gases and debris from an appliance to the outside of your home. And, like your chimney, it can only do that adequately and safely if it’s clean, clear and in proper working order.

Here’s another thing dryer vents have in common with chimneys: when not properly maintained, they can become a dangerous fire and health hazard.

For this reason, the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) has the same recommendation for dryer vents as it does for chimneys: a professional cleaning once each year.

What’s The Harm In Neglecting My Dryer Vents?

Dryer Vent Cleaning Tools - Youngs Chimney ServiceAs your vent moves the exhaust from your dryer toward the outside of your home, it carries toxic carbon monoxide, lint and debris with it. Over time, lint, in particular, builds up in the vent, and if it isn’t attended to, that lint can build up to the point where it blocks or constricts the vent and prevents it from doing its job properly and efficiently. And since lint is highly combustible, the heated air trapped in a blocked or constricted vent can easily cause a home fire.

It’s unfortunately all too common for improperly maintained dryer vents to cause home fires. A Home Structure Fires report released in 2013 by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), notes that more than 15,000 home structure fires involving dryers were reported each year, between 2007 and 2011. These fires resulted in an annual average of 30 deaths, 460 injuries and $216 million in property damage. The most common contributor to dryer-related home fires was “failure to clean”.

How Do Fires Start In Your Dryer?

The way a dryer heats and dries clothes is by drawing air into the heating element coils (or flames if it’s a gas dryer) and then into the drum where your clothes are.  Next, it draws out of your lint trap to the dryer vent outside.

  1. When a dryer vent is clogged, the heat, lint, and dampness cannot escape from the dryer to the outside.

  2. When this happens, it creates back pressure into the dryer.

  3. The heat, lint, and dampness that is not able to exit outside is then redirected to the inside of the dryer.

  4. This causes lint to accumulate around the motor and heating element of the dryer.

Hazardous Dryer VentSo, if the inside of your dryer is full of highly flammable lint, the same stuff they give Boy Scout’s to build fires in the woods, you create a fire hazard.  Lint and air are extracted and drawn into your heating element, starting a fire.  Heating elements in dryers can reach temperatures of 1,000°F so once the fire starts in the heating element it uses clogged vents as fuel for combustion.

Beyond the threat of fire, a blocked dryer vent can force poisonous carbon monoxide back into your home. Because carbon monoxide is odorless, colorless and invisible, it often goes undetected until a member of the family shows signs of poisoning. The effects of carbon monoxide poisoning can include organ damage and even death. Protect your family from the threat of carbon monoxide poisoning by having your dryer vents annually serviced and cleaned!

Fire And Health Hazards Aren’t The Only Issues That Come With Clogged Dryer Vents

When your dryer vent is clogged with lint, your dryer is unable to function properly. Homeowners with lint-lined dryer vents often find that their clothes aren’t drying fully, so they run loads of laundry repeatedly, and for longer periods of time (often at higher heat). Not only does this overwork the dryer and damage the clothes, it is a big waste of money and energy. Cleaning your dryer vent can have a marked effect on improving your appliance’s efficiency, which will save you time and money, and will keep you from wasting resources. It can also prolong the life of your appliance.
